As an introductory task we have also designed a shorter 10km straight line version starting and finishing on foot at the Frocester George pub. It includes the two cylinders at Selsley and Frocester only.
This mini challenge will also have competitors and times listed each year upon completion, and the same rules apply- but sorry, no prizes, you have to graduate to the big challenge!
PLANNING
The challenge is designed to make use of the ridge line and will be conditions-led depending on the day. The wind (if any) will require a westerly component and this will inform your decision over takeoff options. The Cotswold ridge is flyable in either direction but slight variation in wind will define your choices. A good soarable W-NW is ideal. A bit of thermic help even in winter will make a difference. In a soarable Westerly, from Frocester going South the Cam cylinder should be achievable but it may be a one-way dash then to Selsley. In a North-Westerly the opposite is true and it may be challenging to get as far as Cam Long Down without bombing and a walk-all part of the fun!Refreshments-well obviously the Lazy Goose tea rooms in Eastington, the Badger pub at Eastington for post-challenge reflections, The George at Frocester and tea rooms at Eastington Farm Shop between the two.
