The Ubley and Halesland A Glider Blocks

The Avon HG & PG Club has developed very good relations with Bristol Airport Air Traffic Control (ATC) who are keen to allow us fair and flexible use of their airspace whenever possible. We have two agreements with them, covering use of the so-called "Bath Gap", and Ubley, situated on the northern side of the Mendip Hills only 5 miles from Bristol Airport and within Bristol Airport's CTZ. The Avon Club regards Ubley as a closed site, since the club has been unable to negotiate permission from the landowner to launch there. However, if you make an individual decision to use the launch, you will need to obtain permission from Bristol ATC to fly.

If you make an individual decision to use the launch, you will need to obtain permission from Bristol ATC to fly. The site is in the middle of the tightly shaded area (the Ubley Glider Block) in the map above. As this is within Bristol Airport's CTZ (surface to FL105) pilots cannot fly here without permission. However, with permission pilots can fly up to 2,500ft asl, or, if it's looking like a good xc day, pilots can request permission to fly up to 4,000ft asl for two hour periods of time.

If you are going xc from Ubley you will also want to have activated Halesland Glider Block A, which lets you fly up to 4,000ft asl in the area above and to the east of Cheddar.

How do I activate the glider blocks?

Having arrived at Ubley:

  1. Contact one of the six Avon Club reps by phone, SMS, or SW Airspace Telegram group giving details of whether it’s just the 2,500’ UGB you want open, or 4,000’ + HBA, and start/finish times
  2. The Avon Club rep will call Bristol Radar and announce via the SW Airspace Telegram group. They will also text you back in case you don’t have smartphone / internet
  3. If you need to extend the two hour 4,000’ UGB slot call one of the Avon Club reps who will then call Bristol Radar
  4. Once flying has ceased call Bristol Radar on 01275 473714/5 to let them know. Also announce this on Telegram.

Deactivation

The Ubley Glider Block can only be deactivated if a pilot phones Bristol Radar to inform them that all HG or PG activity has ceased for the day, or if the two hour 4.000ft period has ended. If the two hour 4,000ft period has ended the 2,500ft limit will remain active unless cancelled.
